This paper aims to explore the effects of piracy on the film industry, using "The Lipstick Under My Burkha" as a case study.
Perhaps as famous as the film itself is the controversy surrounding its release. In early 2017, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), then headed by Pahlaj Nihalani, refused to certify the film for theatrical release. In a now-infamous letter, the CBFC listed its objections, including "sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography (phone sex) and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society" (implying it might offend Muslims).
