The core gameplay differs from traditional fighters by replacing health bars with a "D-Spirit" collection system. When players land hits, the opponent drops orbs (D-Spirits); the winner is determined by who has collected the most spirits by the end of the round. Characters can "Matrix Evolve" into their Mega forms mid-battle to gain a temporary power boost.

Released in late 2002, Battle Spirit Ver. 1.5 was a significant update that functioned as a "Greatest Hits" version of the game. It was exclusive to the WonderSwan Color, Bandai’s Japan-only handheld system. While the Game Boy Advance version (which was simply titled Digimon Battle Spirit ) was a port of the original Ver. 1.0, the WonderSwan received this superior, expanded version.

To understand Ver. 1.5, one must look at the mechanics of the original Battle Spirit . Unlike traditional fighting games focused on depleting a health bar, this series prioritizes a collection mechanic. When players strike an opponent, blue or red spirit balls fly out onto the stage. The objective is to gather more spirit balls than your opponent before the timer runs out.

: A train level for Patamon featuring flying DemiDevimon.

: Instead of depleting an opponent’s life bar, players attack to dislodge glowing blue orbs called D-Spirits . Knocking these spheres out of your opponent and collecting them before they vanish determines the victor. The fighter holding the most D-Spirits when the timer hits zero wins the round.

: Characters like BlackAgumon , Lopmon , and Gabumon —which required specific playthrough conditions in the original—are playable by default in this version.
