The English adaptation, titled Case Closed , was licensed and dubbed by Funimation Entertainment for English-speaking countries. It aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block and on Canada’s YTV station, introducing North American audiences to the adventures of a pint-sized detective with the mind of a genius. In a striking adaptation choice, Funimation also Americanized many character names: Shinichi Kudo became Jimmy Kudo, Ran Mouri became Rachel Moore, and Kogoro Mouri became Richard Moore. English airdates for the first season began on May 24, 2004.

After using his deductive skills to solve a beheading on a roller coaster, Shinichi secretly follows two suspicious men dressed all in black. Detecting a shady deal, Shinichi is caught off guard, knocked out, and forced to swallow an experimental poison that the men believe will kill him.
