The project began when screenwriter Milton Krims announced in 1950 that he was working on a film called The Ninth Man , based on a 1920 novel set in 15th-century Italy. By 1952, Krims had attached Errol Flynn to the lead role, with Constellation Films and J. Barrett Mahon producing. The following year, the project had evolved into Teacher of Don Juan , a co-production between Flynn's own company, Errol Flynn Enterprises, and Vittorio Vasserotti's Viva Films. Flynn produced the film in association with Barry Mahon, hoping to replicate the European success of his earlier film The Adventures of Don Juan (1948).
