This is, without question, Khomeini's most consequential book and the foundation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was published in 1970 based on a series of lectures he delivered in Najaf. In this powerful and concise treatise, Khomeini argues that Islam is not merely a set of personal beliefs, but a comprehensive social and political system. He contends that Muslims are obliged to establish an Islamic government and that, in the absence of the 12th Imam, the leadership of such a state should fall to the most knowledgeable and just Islamic jurist ( faqih ).
